Position Summary
The Project Manager, Commercial Operations provides ongoing project management support across the Sales & Marketing organization, driving both day-to-day commercial operations and periodic strategic initiatives such as new product launches and indication expansions. This role serves as a central point of coordination across brand marketing, sales operations, market access, medical affairs, and external agency and vendor partners, ensuring that recurring commercial processes run smoothly while also supporting episodic launch and expansion projects as they arise. The ideal candidate combines strong project management discipline with pharmaceutical commercial experience, including familiarity with promotional review processes, field force support including reporting and analytics, and cross-functional operational governance in a regulated life sciences environment.
This role requires direct and prior experience working within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or broader life sciences industry. Candidates without life sciences experience will not meet the requirements for this position.
Key Responsibilities
Ongoing Commercial Operations Support
- Provide continuous project management support for recurring Sales & Marketing operations, including sales meeting cycles, promotional material refreshes, budget tracking, and routine cross-functional planning.
- Facilitate standing commercial operations meetings and governance forums, driving accountability, tracking action items, and escalating risks or delays to leadership in a timely manner.
- Manage the Medical, Legal, and Regulatory (MLR) review and approval process for promotional and non-promotional materials on an ongoing basis, ensuring on-time submission and resolution of reviewer feedback.
- Partner with Sales Operations and Training on continuous field force enablement, including call plan updates, CRM/system maintenance, and ongoing training content rollout.
- Track commercial budgets against plan, working with Finance and brand leads to monitor spend, flag variances, and support forecasting and reconciliation activities throughout the year.
- Manage relationships with external agencies and vendors supporting day-to-day commercial activities, including operational, creative, media, market research, and convention/congress logistics.
- Maintain commercial operations dashboards, status reports, and executive summaries, providing clear ongoing visibility into programs, risks, and key decisions for senior stakeholders. Includes detailed knowledge of pharmaceutical data and reporting standards.
- Ensure all commercial activities adhere to applicable industry regulations, corporate compliance policies, and promotional standards (e.g., PhRMA Code, FDA guidance).
Launch & Strategic Initiative Support
- Support planning and execution of new product launches and major indication expansions as they arise, including timelines, milestones, and interdependencies across marketing, sales, market access, and medical affairs workstreams.
- Coordinate development of go-to-market deliverables for launch initiatives, including brand positioning materials, sales training content, and launch sequencing plans.
- Coordinate with Market Access and Managed Markets teams to align launch timing with payer strategy, pricing approvals, and reimbursement readiness.
- Support post-launch tracking and retrospectives, capturing lessons learned and best practices to strengthen future launch and operational playbooks.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of project management experience, with at least 7-10 years directly supporting pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device commercial operations (ongoing operations, product launches, or both).
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Life Sciences, or related field.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating cross-functional teams across marketing, sales, and market access functions in a regulated life sciences environment, managing both recurring operational cadences and time-bound projects.
- Working knowledge of MLR/promotional review processes and pharmaceutical commercial compliance requirements.
- Strong proficiency with project management tools (e.g., Smartsheet, MS Project, Asana) and standard office productivity software.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams and competing deadlines under pressure.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize complex, cross-functional information for executive audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification or equivalent.
- Experience supporting both steady-state commercial operations and a first-in-class or first-to-market product launch.
- Familiarity with promotional review platforms (e.g., Veeva Vault PromoMats) and CRM systems (e.g., Veeva CRM, Salesforce).
- Experience working with or managing external creative, media, or market research agencies.
- Understanding of managed markets, payer dynamics, and reimbursement pathways for pharmaceutical products.
Key Competencies
- Cross-functional orchestration: builds alignment and drives execution across marketing, sales, access, and medical stakeholders without direct authority.
- Attention to detail and compliance mindset: ensures launch materials and activities meet regulatory and promotional standards.
- Proactive risk management: anticipates timeline and budget risks across ongoing programs and time-bound initiatives, driving mitigation before they impact commercial readiness.
- Executive communication: distills complex operational and project status into clear, actionable updates for senior leadership.
- Adaptability: balances steady, recurring operational cadences with the shifting priorities and timelines of dynamic launch or strategic initiatives.
Work Environment
- This role operates in a hybrid office environment with periodic travel (estimated 10-20%) to sales meetings, medical/scientific congresses, and agency or vendor sites to support both ongoing commercial operations and periodic launch or strategic initiatives.
- Workload is generally steady but intensifies around recurring commercial cycles (e.g., national sales meetings, annual planning) and, when applicable, in the months leading up to a launch date, requiring flexibility to meet critical deadlines.
Hourly Rate
- $90/hr. - $95/hr.
