Full Stack Engineer - React & Java

Requirements:

• 5+ years of commercial software engineering experience.
• Strong, recent Java and Spring Boot experience; this is essential.
• Credible, recent hands-on frontend development experience, ideally with React.
• Experience with TypeScript and/or JavaScript; Next.js experience is relevant.
• Engineers with Vue or similar modern frontend experience may be considered if they have strong frontend fundamentals and are comfortable working with React.
• Experience working in Agile, multidisciplinary product teams and collaborating directly with Product Managers or product teams.
• Experience building new products or solutions, rather than working predominantly on migrations or maintenance programmes.
• Ability to make independent technical decisions, own solutions, and explain the reasoning and trade-offs.
• Experience understanding product users or customers, clarifying requirements, considering multiple technical approaches, and communicating with engineers and stakeholders across teams.
• Ability to contribute across the stack; a perfect 50/50 frontend/backend split is not required, but Java and Spring Boot expertise is non-negotiable.
• Ability to contribute technically from day one.
• Ability to attend our Manchester office two days each week and live within a realistically commutable distance or be prepared to relocate.

Responsibilities:

• Design and build new functionality using Java, Spring Boot, React, and TypeScript or JavaScript.
• Work across backend services and modern frontend applications.
• Collaborate with Product Managers and multidisciplinary engineering teams to understand and clarify requirements.
• Shape ambiguous requirements into effective technical solutions and challenge requirements where appropriate.
• Make engineering decisions concerning service design, databases, caching, and application architecture.
• Evaluate technical approaches and communicate their trade-offs.
• Create technical documentation, including RFCs and ADRs where appropriate.
• Take ownership from initial requirements and technical design through to delivery.

Were recruiting Full Stack Engineers for a contract product engineering role with a leading global digital organisation, building a brand-new product from the ground up. The team works across locations and time zones and values engineers who take ownership, work through ambiguity, and make independent decisions. The role is hybrid in Manchester, with two office days every week; the specific days will be agreed with the team. Occasional travel alone does not meet the onsite requirement. The products you have worked on may be internal or customer-facing.
