Senior Software Engineer (Python & Distributed Systems)

Salary: £60,000 - 85,000 per year

Requirements:

• 8 years of professional backend software engineering and data processing experience with Python
• Strong knowledge of Linux systems and Bash shell scripting
• Solid understanding of IP networking, including IPv4/IPv6, VLANs, and routing
• Experience building RESTful and concurrent distributed systems
• Practical experience with frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django

Responsibilities:

• Develop backend services that integrate prototype wearable devices into data collection pipelines
• Deploy, monitor, and optimize distributed systems that ingest real-time sensor data
• Build automated tools for data validation, system health monitoring, and pipeline diagnostics
• Troubleshoot issues onsite, perform root cause analysis, and debug networks in a live lab environment
• Collaborate with audio/video engineers, technicians, and international research teams

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to support and scale software systems in our Cambridge data collection lab. The role involves building and integrating backend services for prototype wearables that collect audio, video, and IMU sensor data, helping ensure collection is fast, accurate, and reliable. This is a 12-month contract, fully onsite across our central Cambridge and Bourn Quarter facilities in Cambridgeshire, UK.
