Description
In this role you will design and build high-performance authentication APIs that power Tesco’s global customer touchpoints. You’ll drive scalable, secure, and resilient solutions in a fast-paced, high-traffic environment. You collaborate with product and engineering teams to shape requirements and steer technical direction, while mentoring peers and elevating engineering standards. This is a chance to impact new propositions across Tesco by advancing identity and access capabilities at scale.

- Design, build and maintain mission-critical authentication systems with a focus on scalability, security and resilience
- Lead the technical design of complex features and initiatives aligned with strategy
- Partner with product managers and the wider team to shape requirements and deliver business outcomes
- Provide technical leadership across teams and drive key initiatives
- Drive engineering excellence through high-quality software practices
- Own production systems, lead incident resolution and root cause analysis to improve reliability and security
- Share knowledge with the wider engineering community
- Mentor and support engineers to raise engineering standards
- Contribute to recruitment and interview processes to attract talent
- Expert proficiency in at least one major programming language (Java preferred)
- Extensive experience designing and supporting large-scale distributed systems
- Collaborative mindset for cross-functional work
- Strong understanding of software engineering principles (SOLID, design patterns)
- DevOps mindset with production support, incident resolution and root cause analysis
- Experience leading technical initiatives across multiple teams
- Knowledge of identity and access management concepts (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect) would be advantageous
