Software Developer (Java & Typescript)

Overview

In this role, you will deliver secure, scalable software for a critical digital transformation programme in the defence and national security sector. You join a multidisciplinary Agile team to design and maintain back-end services and APIs that operate within highly regulated environments. You will collaborate with architects, security stakeholders and product teams to ensure reliable, secure delivery that supports operational decision-making. This is a hands-on, impact-driven opportunity to shape secure software used in national defence programmes.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain back-end services using Java and TypeScript
• Build and support RESTful APIs and microservices with Express.js
• Deliver secure, scalable, high-performing software for Defence and Government environments
• Work across full SDLC from requirements to live service support
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate operational requirements into technical solutions
• Produce clean, well-tested code aligned with engineering standards
• Contribute to solution architecture and design decisions
• Support CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps practices
• Troubleshoot complex issues across development, testing and production
• Participate in peer reviews, knowledge sharing and mentoring
• Ensure solutions meet security, compliance and accessibility requirements
• Operate within Agile delivery teams including planning, refinement, stand-ups and retrospectives

Key requirements

• Active SC Clearance (mandatory)
• Experience delivering software in Defence/Government or high-security environments
• Strong commercial experience with Java
• Strong experience with TypeScript and Express.js
• Experience building REST API and microservice architectures
• Strong secure software engineering practices
• Experience with version control, automated testing and code quality processes
• Experience in Agile delivery teams
• Familiarity with CI/CD and DevSecOps methodologies
• Experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure or GCP)
