Technical Leadership and Decision Scope
- Own team-level technical decisions, including architecture, engineering standards, and implementation trade-offs within agreed team boundaries.
- Set shared technical direction across projects. Project Leads coordinate project delivery and make project-specific decisions consistent with team standards; decisions with broader architectural or cross-team impact are aligned with this role and relevant partners.
- Partner with the engineering manager, who retains people-management and team-priority decisions. Escalate decisions that exceed the team's technical scope or introduce significant cross-team or customer risk.
- Balance implementation work with architecture, technical guidance, and mentoring; this is a hands-on engineering role, not a full-time coordination role.
What You'll Do
Technical Direction and Delivery
- Design, architect, and deliver complex features across the full web application stack.
- Translate business needs into technical solutions with Product Owners, engineers, and other partners; break complex problems into clear implementation approaches and communicate trade-offs and risks.
- Guide architecture and design decisions, document significant decisions and rationale, and keep project solutions aligned with team standards.
Experimentation and Customer Outcomes
- Partner with Product Owners and analytics and design partners to turn customer and business opportunities into testable hypotheses.
- Build the application capabilities needed to run experiments, such as reliable analytics instrumentation, feature flags, and controlled rollouts.
- Ensure experiments are measurable and meet standards for performance, accessibility, privacy, and reliability; use results to guide iteration, rollout, or rollback decisions.
- Apply test-and-learn findings to improve engagement and acquisition across customer journeys.
Engineering Quality and Production Health
- Build and evolve secure, scalable, resilient, accessible, and high-performing applications.
- Improve code quality, automated testing, observability, reliability, and maintainability to increase confidence in delivery.
- Identify and address performance, accessibility, availability, and scalability issues; partner with Site Reliability Engineering on production investigations, root-cause analysis, and lasting fixes.
Team Leadership and Improvement
- Mentor engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.
- Simplify systems, reduce technical debt, and improve team development practices.
- Evaluate technologies and frameworks, adopting them when there is a clear benefit to customers, applications, or engineering effectiveness.
AI-Native Engineering
- Lead practical adoption of modern AI coding agents across engineering workflows, including implementation, test creation, refactoring, documentation, and operational support.
- Help the team build repeatable ways to work with agents, including clear task context, appropriate human review, and validation through tests and other quality checks.
- Use only approved tools and protect customer, company, and proprietary information; ensure generated changes meet security, privacy, licensing, accessibility, and engineering standards.
- Evaluate whether agent-assisted workflows improve delivery, quality, or developer experience, and share effective practices across the team.
What Success Looks Like
- Team-level technical decisions and standards are clear, documented where useful, and applied consistently across projects.
- Customer journeys meet agreed expectations for quality, security, accessibility, performance, and reliability, with risks surfaced early.
- Experiments produce trustworthy insights that inform product decisions and improvements to customer engagement and acquisition.
- Production issues lead to root-cause understanding and sustainable improvements, not only short-term fixes.
- Engineers are better equipped to make sound technical decisions, and delivery is more predictable through effective collaboration and automation.
- AI coding agents are used through repeatable, responsible workflows that improve engineering effectiveness without compromising quality, security, or customer trust.
- 9+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on experience building modern web applications.
- Demonstrated experience architecting and delivering complex production systems, setting technical direction, and carrying solutions from design through production.
- Strong hands-on expertise in JavaScript and TypeScript, with deep experience in React and Redux or a comparable state-management technology.
- Strong experience with Node.js, REST APIs, Express, and server-side JavaScript or TypeScript development.
- Practical experience with automated testing frameworks such as Jest and Mocha, and with modern JavaScript development practices and web architecture patterns.
- Experience designing and operating applications for scalability, performance, resilience, accessibility, security, and maintainability.
- Demonstrated technical leadership, including mentoring engineers, guiding design decisions, and helping teams reach sound technical outcomes.
- Experience working with Agile development methodologies and DevOps principles, including automated delivery, monitoring, and production support.
- Strong ownership, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across teams and explain technical decisions and trade-offs.
- A customer-first mindset and a track record of improving digital experiences through engineering quality, automation, and continuous improvement.
- Willingness to experiment with modern AI coding assistants or agents and the judgment to critically review and validate their output.
